CARSTENSZ PYRAMID HISTORYCarstensz Pyramid is named for Dutch seaman and explorer John Carstensz, who, along with his crew, were the first Europeans to see the snowcapped mountain. After returning to Holland in 1623, people didnt believe him when he talked about a snowy mountain near the equator. This name is still used among mountaineers, although the snowfield of Puncak Jaya was reached as early as 1909 by a Dutch explorer, Hendrik A. Lorentz.
When Indonesia took control of the province in the 1960s, the peak was renamed 'Puntjak Soekarno' or Sukarno Peak, later this was changed to Puncak Jaya. Puncak means peak or mountain and Jaya means 'victory', 'victorious' or 'glorious'.
Although it is not considered a part of a major continent, the 16,023-foot Carstenz Pyramid on the Indonesian island of Irian Jaya is certainly more challenging than the tame Kosciusko of Australia. Its remoteness, jungle environment and technical rock climbing make it a de facto member of the "Seven Summits." |
